Au/Ra Opens Up About Creating Her New Single Dead Girland Its Video Game-Esque Music Video
Au/Ra is saying goodbye to the people who don’t roll with her vibe in her latest single “Dead Girl” and we are here 👏🏼 for 👏🏼 it 👏🏼!
The budding pop star’s song is a catchy tune that will make you want to instantly get up and dance. But don’t let the infectious beat fool you — Au/Ra says the the song’s meaning is still very dark, and she hopes that her fans and music lovers alike can relate to it in some way.
“The song title sounds very dark and the meaning of it is definitely very dark. All of my songs are like metaphors for different things. Even though they have a dark title, it’s like, they’re actually trying to say something else, but like I feel I can kind of get that from listening to a song,” Au/Ra tells Celeb Secrets of the song during an IG Live last month.
“‘Dead Girl’ is basically like a metaphor for feeling dead to the people that don’t understand you. So it’s not literally about death, it’s more like you being dead to whoever that you feel just isn’t getting you and that’s kind of something I really felt for a while. It happens all the time. There are always people that just won’t understand you kind of like a common life thing.”
Just a few weeks ago (March 26), Au/Ra dropped the music video for the track and to no surprise, it’s absolutely insane. Starring as a “supernatural creature that [she’s] been building up for the past two, three years,” the music video for “Dead Girl” follows the Antigua-based singer in a video game-esque visual running through the city.
“I’ve always wanted to like make a video that felt like a video game, and COVID obviously gave me a perfect excuse to like do something that was remote like that,” Au/Ra explains. “The process was crazy. It took like a little longer than we thought because we had to build my whole character, mold my face and CG body and everything, but it was really cool. Getting to design that with my amazing team was a very, very fun process.”
“I think my favorite part [of the video] is when [I] get up from the car that I’ve just fallen on top of and break free of these like roots and start to get up and everything’s burning with the green fire. I really like it because the car actually — a lot of people have been asking me if the car scene and the vines relate to this other song I have called ‘Ideas’ and it does. There are actually a lot of Easter eggs in that video.
“Dead Girl” follows the success her song “I miss u” with Jax Jones, which peaked at #1 on the US dance charts. Au/Ra continues to write music that touches on the issues facing today’s young generation and the 18-year-old has gained over 10 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
While confirming that new music will certainly be on the way very soon, Au/Ra shares that it will be a little different from her previous releases.
“The only thing that’s been kind of keeping me saying this whole time is that I’ve been able to continue working and do online Zoom sessions with the people that I work with. I’ve been consistently working this whole time doing remote photo and video shoots,” she tells Celeb Secrets.
“I wouldn’t necessarily say the [new music sounds the same] because I feel like all of the music that’s coming has a very distinctive kind of different sound. Nothing really sounds similar to each other which I really love. There’s kind of something for everyone in there, like divine, what they’re more into, which is cool, and I’m excited about it.”
