EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Rayvon Owen Talks About Recent Single "Volume"
Last week, Rayvon Owen dropped his amazing new single “Volume”. It’s an all-empowering confident track, that we really cannot get enough of, at the moment. To our delight, this incredible male vocalist had the time to answer some questions for an exclusive interview.
He went viral when he dropped his debut music video, for the song “Can’t Fight It”, where he came out as gay. Now, he’s quickly becoming a big LGBT+ influencer and an inspiration to many within the community.
He continues to impress us all with his brilliant vocals as he drops new music and videos on his YouTube Channel. It was a complete honour to be able to interview him. We’re excited for you to read this interview.
We chat to Rayvon Owen about his new single “Volume”, his past songs and videos, his time on American Idol – where he came fourth on the 14th series – and what we can expect from him in the next few months.
Hey there, Rayvon Owen. We hope you are doing well today. What have you been up to lately?
I’m doing well, thank you. Hope you all are well. I have been on the road a bit traveling and performing as well as writing a bit and catching up with friends!
Your new single is “Volume”, which we simply adore. Can you tell us more about the track?
Thank you so much! I’m glad you guys like it! Well, I co-wrote “Volume” with this incredible songwriter/production duo by the name of The Gifted. They’re incredible. It’s sort of a pump-yourself-up kind of track and I’m just sharing some feelings from some of my life experiences.
What does the song mean to you?
To me, “Volume” is about being confident in yourself and embracing who you are – never being afraid to speak out and stand up for yourself and what you believe in.
Where did the inspiration for the song come from?
I think it’s a combination of me learning to love and embrace myself for who I am and me fighting the urge to be someone I’m not.
Can you tell us your favourite lyrics from the track?
“I’m on a mission, you best believe it. Don’t need nobody I can dance tonight alone.”
Will there be a music video? And, if so, can you reveal any exclusive details about it?
All I can say is that there will be some video content coming soon :)
The single comes after your amazing feature on MODL’s “Let It Go”, please tell us how that came about, what the reaction to the song has been like, and your thoughts on the track itself.
My awesome management in Nashville connected me with MODL and I loved his track – it was really cool getting to collaborate with him and I’ve gotten an awesome reaction from the fans!
You also released a cover of La Roux’s “Bulletproof”, what made you choose that song to cover?
The original is such a bop – I love La Roux and have always dug that song so much! It’s funny because it’s actually kind of a bittersweet lyric that just sounds fun so I thought it would be cool to give it a moodier take in my own style.
We also love the lyric video and the dance video to the cover of “Bulletproof”, how did they both come about?
Thank you! The lyric video I did in Nashville; and, I wanted to shoot a one-take, slow-motion vibe with subtitles of the lyrics. I worked with some incredible dancers for a show I was doing in Dallas and during a spare day, they decided to help me creatively express the song through movement. We choreographed and organized in one day. It was so much fun.
Talking about videos, we still can’t get over your incredible tribute to Demi Lovato with your medley video of her songs. What was that like to record?
I’ve always been inspired by Demi’s music and her journey. It was really cool to dig into her incredible, extensive catalogue and arrange the songs to put a little of my own spin on it. The director, team and crew were awesome to work with and made it such a creative, fun space.
You’ve released a lot of singles and a couple of EPs, however, your debut single was “Can’t Fight It”, which was how we came across you, thanks to YouTube Recommendations. What does this song mean to you?
So happy you guys came across it – thank you! “Can’t Fight It” will always be such a special song for me. I feel like it was a personal and creative moment of growth for me learning how to accept who I am and embrace every part of me.
The music video is one of our favourites, what was it like to film?
Happy you like it… it was so much fun to film! I got to be on set with a bunch of my friends and college buddies from Nashville. Music video shoots can be long and exhausting, but it was one of the most memorable few days of my life!
Before this release, you were a contestant on American Idol. What was that experience like?
‘American Idol’ was such a life-changing experience. It was years of entertainment industry experience jam-packed into months! I loved it.
You work with a few organisations, becoming a strong presence in the LGBT Community, can you tell us more about your work with The Trevor Project, Human Rights Campaign and POINT Foundation?
I have thoroughly enjoyed working with these LGBT organizations that make an incredible difference in the lives of so many LGBT people – especially youth!
What are your thoughts on “Bridegroom”, the documentary that your boyfriend, Shane Bitney Crone, released?
Well, ‘Bridegroom’ actually took place before Shane and I even met. It’s such a touching personal story, though, that really humanizes gay rights issues.
We see you as a really strong member of the LGBT Community, is there anything you want to say to encourage other people to be strong?
Well, I definitely have my weak days like everyone else, but I encourage people to do whatever they need to do to take care of themselves. Love and encourage yourself and surround yourself with people who build you up – not bring you down.
Let’s get back to “Volume”, it’s your new exciting single. Why should people listen to it?
I think people should give it a shot and listen to it because it’s a message that everyone can get behind. Even if it’s not your favorite genre of music, I think there’s something everyone can take from it. And if all else fails, I think it’s something everyone can dance to!
What can we expect from you in the forthcoming months?
There is a lot in the works, including a new project as well as some acting and modeling projects.
And, finally, is there anything you want to say to your fans?
I just want to say to my supporters that I am so grateful for you guys, sticking by me and always being there for me. It means more than you know. I wouldn’t be here without you guys AT ALL!
Thank you, Rayvon Owen, for your time in answering our questions. We are still playing “Volume” up high and on repeat, and we can’t wait to see what you release next. We look forward to the new projects.
