EXCLUSIVE: Interview With IYVES - CelebMix

Publish date: 2024-06-29

Brooklyn based artist IYVES has burst onto the scene with the release of her critically acclaimed debut EP ‘Chromatic’.

Here we speak exclusively to IYVES to discuss touring, musical heroes, future plans and more;

Growing up who inspired your love of music?

I grew up in a household that always had music playing – whether it was classic rock songs, the Sunday gospel my mom would play on the radio or my sister and I playing around on the key board. My parents although not musically inclined, really encouraged and surrounded my sister and I with music.

Who are your all time musical heroes?

I have multiple musical heroes from different times in my life who really influenced my artistry but also just were super impactful in my day to day life. From a young age and to today the Beatles have been huge musical heroes for me. Their music is timeless, transcendent! Every melody and lyric is so simple yet so brilliant and astute. Another musical hero is Radiohead. They have been hugely impactful throughout my life. I love how every album they put out is so different from the ones they put out previously. They are truly pioneers and innovators of our lifetime.

Are there any rising acts you’re really into at the moment?

I was recently introduced the artist, Cautious Clay. He is incredible, he has an incredible voice and his production is really interesting and fresh.

When did you first decide to pursue music as a career?

I wanted to pursue music from a young age! It was one of those things that I didn’t necessarily have an “aha” moment but rather it was gradual and just became evident that was what I felt destined to do.

How would your describe the overall style and vibe of your own music?

I have so many influences and genres that inspire me! I suppose the music falls under alt-soul/ R&B. I have tried to explore different sounds so that the music can fluidly live in a lot of different worlds.

When writing new tracks where do you look for inspiration?

The more personal and vulnerable I can get the better I feel about the songs I write. Living in New York I am constantly so overstimulated and inspired by what surrounds me but ultimately I have to pull back and really check in with whats going on with me and my own life at the moment.

Do you have any plans to release a full length album soon?

That is absolutely the goal! I would love to but out a large body of work in the near future.

Do you have any touring plans lined up?

I have plans and hopes to tour in the next year. I have a lot of music I plan on releasing for the remainder of the year into early 2019 so tours are in order!

What are your long term career goals?

My long term goals and hopes are that I will get to tour the world with my music, collaborate with artists that inspire and influence me and ultimately feel like my music is helping and inspiring people who listen to it.
