Greenacre, NSW: Fireys battle massive scrap metal fire
Dozens of firefighters remain on the scene of a massive fire which broke out in a scrap metal yard in Sydney’s southwest.
It’s expected crews will be there for hours after being called to the factory on Claremont Ave, Greenacre, about 20km southwest of the CBD, just after 10am Saturday.
Fire and Rescue NSW say 10 trucks and 40 firefighters were on the scene at one stage, with people being urged to avoid the area due to toxic smoke.
“The fire is contained but continues to burn fiercely in the centre,” said FRNSW in an update on their Twitter account.
“All smoke is toxic and an irritant, our advice is to avoid the area.”
A factory warehouse on the site was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
Road closures are also in place around the scene, with motorists urged to avoid the area.
The blaze is still causing thick smoke to blanket the scene.
Early on, excavators had to be called in to assist firefighters, with FRNSW expecting a “protracted incident.”
