Is Natalie Portman Left Handed?

Publish date: 2024-06-19

Lefties make up just 10% of the world’s population, but that’s not stopping them from thriving. Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars are left-handed, but is Natalie Portman one of them?

Natalie Portman isn’t left-handed. The Oscar-winning actress uses her dominant right hand to sign autographs and hold movie props, but she worked with several left-handed stars.

Stick around to uncover evidence of Natalie Portman’s right-handedness, and learn more about famous lefties that she had the pleasure of working with.

Using Her Right Hand

Natalie Portman never publicly discussed if she’s right-handed, but there’s a lot of evidence proving that she’s not a leftie. Countless photos and videos show her signing autographs with her right hand, and she also uses it to hold props in movies.

Portman made her film debut in 1994, when she landed the role in Luc Besson’s cult classic Léon: The Professional. Her character Mathilda is holding a gun in several scenes, and she’s always doing it with her right hand.

A few years down the road, Portman was cast as Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. She was pictured with several weapons in the movies and promotional shots and always used her dominant right hand to hold them.

Her role in the post-Civil War revenge drama Jane Got a Gun also included work with firearms. Stills from this western show Portman holding a gun with both hands, but she’s using her right to control the weapon.

Guns aren’t the only prop that Portman worked with on the set of her movies. She also had to learn how to use bow and arrow for the role of a medieval archer in Your Highness.

Archery requires skilled use of both hands, but it’s pretty easy to say if the person is right-handed or left-handed based on the way they’re holding bow and arrow. Natalie Portman is a perfect example – she holds a bow in her left hand and uses her dominant right hand to shoot arrows, in an attempt to make her aim more precise.

Natalie Portman worked with many props throughout her career, but she’s currently on her way to wield the most iconic one of all – Thor’s hammer. She played a scientist and Thor’s love interest Jane Foster in several MCU movies, but her role is going to become much bigger in Thor: Love and Thunder.

This project was announced at Marvel’s Comic-Con panel in 2019, and Portman revealed that she’ll take on the mantle of a female incarnation of Thor. Thor: Love and Thunder will premiere in 2022, and the Oscar-winning actress said that she’s “very excited to wield the hammer” and work with Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth again.

Natalie Portman’s Left-Handed Co-Stars

Natalie Portman isn’t left-handed, but she worked with many Hollywood stars who are.

Scarlett Johansson, who played Portman’s sister in the historical drama The Other Boleyn Girl, is one of Hollywood’s most notable lefties. Both actresses are also a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Johansson played Natasha Romanoff/ Black Widow, while Portman took on the role of Jane Foster.

Portman’s Cold Mountain co-star Nicole Kidman is another famous southpaw, but she learned to write with her right hand for the role of Virginia Woolf in The Hours.

Kidman is actually one of two left-handed Best Actress Oscar winners who played right-handed characters. The same can be said about Julia Roberts, who won her Academy Award for Erin Brockovich, and later starred alongside Natalie Portman in Closer.

The Black Swan actress worked alongside several more famous lefties, including Lisa Kudrow (Love and Other Impossible Pursuits), Owen Wilson (The Darjeeling Limited), and Matt Dillon (Beautiful Girls).

Natalie Portman is known for her great commitment to each project. She’d probably have no trouble learning to write with her left hand if a role called for it – it just hadn’t happened yet.
