JoAnne A. Epps was an American law professor, legal author, and Temple University Acting President who was born on May 28, 1951 and died on September 19, 2023. She was previously the University’s Executive Vice President and Provost.

Epps’ major areas of expertise included criminal procedure, evidence, and trial advocacy. She instructed Litigation Fundamentals, a required course for Temple’s first-year law students. Her dedication to curricular innovation and experiential legal education spurred the establishment of Temple Law School’s Stephen and Sandra Sheller Center for Social Justice, which introduces students to the various roles that lawyers can play in ensuring access to civil justice. National Jurist named her one of the 25 most prominent leaders in legal education.

She trained Sudanese lawyers who defended Darfur conflict victims, as well as prosecutors for the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Epps formerly worked as an Assistant United States Attorney in Philadelphia and as a Deputy City Attorney in Los Angeles before joining Temple. Epps holds honours degrees from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and Yale Law School.
