Pets killed in house fire

A HOUSE fire has claimed the lives of at least three pets at a southeast home.

It is believed the Birkdale occupants were woken by smoke alarms in the middle of the night to find their house ablaze.

While the occupants managed to escape, three cats were found dead inside the house when fire crews arrived, with another unaccounted for.

Two other cats and a dog were taken to a veterinarian for further treatment.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire but are not treating it as suspicious.
